The construction of a Russian-Indian pharmaceutical plant for the production of anti-cancer drugs in the Kaluga region, with an investment threshold of 3 billion rubles, is not only a significant event for the region's healthcare and economy, but also a powerful driver for related industrial sectors. In particular, the project will have a significant structural impact on companies specializing in the production and supply of industrial refrigeration equipment.

For such enterprises, this project represents a major contract that can provide capacity utilization for years to come. The creation of approximately 200 new high-tech jobs indirectly indicates the need for skilled professionals in the installation and maintenance of complex engineering systems, including refrigeration systems. Regional and federal suppliers will have a long-term opportunity for collaboration, given that the design and commissioning process will take several years by 2030. This stimulates the market to engage in technological competition, as pharmaceutical production places exceptionally high demands on the accuracy and reliability of all systems, including climate and refrigeration systems.

Application of industrial refrigeration equipment in pharmaceutical production

In the processes of creating and storing anti-cancer active pharmaceutical substances (APS), industrial refrigeration equipment is a critical infrastructure. Its functions are diverse and cover all stages, from research to the shipment of finished products.

  1. Refrigerated chambers and storage complexes. They are designed to ensure strict temperature conditions for storing raw materials, intermediate products, and finished substances. They often operate in the ranges of +2°C to +8°C (cold) and -20°C to -80°C (deep cold). Key features: high temperature accuracy (±1°C or better), uniform cold distribution, backup power systems, and continuous parameter monitoring. For ultra-low temperatures, cascade refrigeration systems are used.

  2. Chillers (liquid coolers). These units provide cooling for process equipment. In pharmaceuticals, chillers are critical for controlling the temperature of reactions in chemical reactors, as well as for the operation of crystallizers, condensers, and freeze-drying machines (in lyophilization). They must provide a stable coolant temperature with high accuracy, have smooth power regulation, and meet purity requirements (for example, when using injection water as a coolant).

  3. Air conditioning systems with precision control. They provide not only comfortable conditions for personnel, but also the specified parameters of cleanliness, temperature, and humidity in clean production areas (ISO-class clean rooms). Maintaining stable low humidity prevents the clumping of hygroscopic powders, while temperature control ensures compliance with technological process regulations.

  4. Low-temperature refrigeration units for technological processes. Specialized equipment for operations such as freeze-drying (lyophilization), which is often used for thermolabile substances. These units are capable of creating and maintaining temperatures of up to -80°C and below in vacuum chambers for extended periods, requiring the use of specialized refrigerants and complex automation systems.

  5. Refrigeration equipment for the laboratory unit. Includes laboratory refrigerators and freezers, shock freezers, and cryostats. Ensures the preservation of samples, reagents, and cultures during research and quality control.

Thus, the implementation of the project in the Kaluga region will create a stable demand for high-tech, energy-efficient refrigeration equipment that meets international GMP standards. This opens up opportunities for both direct deliveries and the development of service and engineering services in the region, improving the overall level of competence in the industry.

Copeland launches CO₂ compressor with DVI technology

In December 2025, Copeland—a global leader in compressor manufacturing—unveiled a new development: a CO₂ scroll compressor featuring Dynamic Vapor Injection (DVI) technology. This milestone marked a significant step in the evolution of industrial refrigeration equipment, as the combination of the natural refrigerant CO₂ and an advanced vapor injection system opens up new possibilities for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing operating costs, and meeting environmental regulations.
