Investments of 19.2 billion rubles made by the Rostov Region government for the development of projects in the field of liquefied natural gas (LNG) provide a powerful impetus not only for the energy sector, but also for related high-tech industries. The key beneficiaries of this large-scale program, along with energy companies themselves, are manufacturers and engineering and installation companies specializing in industrial refrigeration and cryogenic equipment. This provides them with a period of long-term strategic growth, diversification of their order portfolio, and technological modernization.

The impact on the industrial refrigeration equipment industry will be multifaceted. Firstly, there are direct and significant contracts for the construction of both the existing small-scale complex and two new, more powerful complexes, as well as a network of cryogenic filling stations. This ensures stable production capacity utilization for years to come. Secondly, the emphasis on import substitution in the project (the use of equipment from the Rostov-based company Shelf) encourages domestic manufacturers to accelerate the development and improvement of complex cryogenic technologies. Thirdly, there is a synergistic effect: the development of LNG competencies allows companies to adapt these technologies for other markets, such as the food industry, pharmaceuticals, and chemical synthesis, where deep cooling and gas liquefaction are also in demand. Thus, a local project becomes a catalyst for the entire national industrial refrigeration industry.

LNG production and utilization projects involve a complex of specialized industrial refrigeration and cryogenic equipment, each component of which performs a critical function.

  1. Main process refrigeration cycle (gas liquefaction equipment): This is the heart of any LNG complex. It uses cryogenic refrigeration machines and turbo-expander units that operate on complex cycles (often the Kapitsa cycle or its modifications). Their key task is to provide multi-stage cooling and liquefaction of natural gas from +20°C to -162°C. The equipment is characterized by extremely high refrigeration capacity (from hundreds of kW to several MW), the use of special refrigerants (mixtures of nitrogen, methane, and ethane), and operation at high pressure. Small-scale complexes may use modular units with piston or screw compressors, while large projects require centrifugal compressors with high-power turbo drives.

  2. Cryogenic heat exchangers: These are the "lungs" of the process. They use compact plate-fin and spiral heat exchangers made of aluminum alloys, which can withstand extreme temperature differences with minimal cold loss. Their function is to ensure efficient heat exchange between the cooling agent and the liquefied gas at various stages of the process. They are characterized by high heat exchange efficiency, complex channel design, and strict requirements for the cleanliness of their internal surfaces.

  3. LNG storage and filling equipment: After liquefaction, the gas is stored in cryogenic isothermal tanks. These are complex engineering structures, a "vessel in a vessel" type, with vacuum powder insulation between the walls, minimizing the influx of heat. Their key characteristics are the volume (from tens to thousands of cubic meters), the degree of static evaporation (the permissible loss of cold), and the safety system. Cryo filling stations use cryogenic pumping equipment - submersible or centrifugal pumps capable of pumping liquid at a temperature of -160°C. They are distinguished by materials resistant to cold brittleness and special sealing systems.

  4. Vapor recovery systems of evaporation (BOG): Vapor recovery systems are used to maintain storage pressure and prevent methane vapors from being released into the atmosphere. These include low-pressure compressors and regasifiers that return vaporized gas back to the system or prepare it for delivery to vehicle engines. This equipment works with unstable flows and low temperatures.

Thus, large-scale investments in the LNG infrastructure of the Rostov region create a stable market for manufacturers of high-tech cryogenic equipment, setting strict requirements for reliability, energy efficiency, and localization of production. This is not just a one-time supply, but the formation of a long-term technological partnership that can elevate the entire industrial refrigeration industry to a new level.

Copeland launches CO₂ compressor with DVI technology

In December 2025, Copeland—a global leader in compressor manufacturing—unveiled a new development: a CO₂ scroll compressor featuring Dynamic Vapor Injection (DVI) technology. This milestone marked a significant step in the evolution of industrial refrigeration equipment, as the combination of the natural refrigerant CO₂ and an advanced vapor injection system opens up new possibilities for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing operating costs, and meeting environmental regulations.
