Zurab Kuchchaev, Acting Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Dagestan, reported to Prime Minister Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov about "breakthrough" projects, highlighting one of the key stages in the development of the region's agro-industrial complex. This involves the large-scale construction of fruit storage facilities with a total capacity of 8,800 tons in the Derbent District. This project, which is being implemented as part of the development of the fruit and vegetable cluster, is a logical continuation of the investments already made by Angelina LLC, which has completed the establishment of intensive orchards on 100 hectares and the construction of a 2,200-ton storage facility in Makhachkala. This initiative not only transforms the agricultural landscape of the republic, but also serves as a powerful driver for growth in related industries, particularly for companies specializing in the production and installation of industrial refrigeration equipment.

The announced construction of the second stage of storage facilities opens up significant prospects for refrigeration equipment market players. Firstly, it involves direct large-scale contracts for the supply, installation, and launch of high-tech complexes. Secondly, such infrastructure facilities require not one-time deliveries, but the creation of holistic, integrated storage systems with a long-term service cycle, modernization, and the possibility of supplying spare parts. This forms stable long-term partnerships between agricultural holdings and engineering companies. Thirdly, the successful implementation of such a flagship project can become a reference for other regions of the North Caucasus and Southern Russia, creating a wave of similar investments and, as a result, a steady demand for industrial refrigeration solutions. For suppliers, this means that they need to demonstrate the maximum reliability, energy efficiency, and adaptability of their equipment to local conditions.

The technological heart of modern fruit storage facilities, such as those planned in Dagestan, is complex engineering systems that ensure long-term preservation of products. The key equipment that will be used there includes several key components.

1. Industrial-grade refrigeration units (chiller units). These are the basis of the system that provides cold generation. For storage facilities of this scale, powerful piston, screw, or spiral compressor stations are used, often consisting of several independent modules for redundancy. They operate on environmentally friendly refrigerants (e.g., R-448A, R-449A) and are characterized by high energy efficiency (COP of at least 3.0-3.5). Their function is to maintain a specified temperature in the storage chambers, usually between 0°C and +4°C for stone fruits and pome fruits.

2. Controlled Atmosphere Systems (CAS or CAC). This is the most technologically advanced part of the equipment, which fundamentally distinguishes a modern storage facility from a simple refrigerator. CAS allows for precise control of the gas composition in a sealed chamber, reducing the oxygen concentration (up to 1-3%) and increasing the carbon dioxide level (up to 2-5%). This suppresses fruit respiration and pathogen activity, allowing for a 2-3-fold increase in storage time without compromising quality. The equipment includes gas generators (adsorption or membrane), scrubbers for removing excess CO2, precise gas composition monitoring systems, and automatic valves for maintaining balance.

3. Climate systems and air distribution. Uniformity of temperature and humidity is the key to preserving the entire volume of products. To achieve this, we use powerful systems for forced air circulation through the stacks of products using fans, evaporative humidifiers to maintain humidity at 90-95%, and precise evaporator defrosting systems to prevent ice formation without temperature fluctuations.

4. Thermal insulation structures and airtight doors. The efficiency of all equipment directly depends on the quality of the enclosing structures. Sandwich panels with a filling of polyisocyanurate foam (PIR) or polyurethane foam (PUR) with a thickness of 120 to 200 mm are used, which have the best thermal insulation properties and fire safety class. Automatic airtight airlock-type doors minimize cold loss during loading and unloading.

5. Automated control and dispatching systems. All technological processes are controlled by a single industrial automation system based on programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The system monitors thousands of parameters in real time, allows for remote control of storage modes for different chambers, and generates reports. It is the "brain" of the storage facility, ensuring the execution of predefined storage programs for each type of fruit.

Thus, the investment project to create fruit storage facilities in Dagestan goes far beyond agricultural construction. It acts as a catalyst for the domestic refrigeration engineering industry, creating a demand for the most advanced storage technologies. The successful implementation of this project will not only minimize seasonal losses of precious crops, but also lay the foundation for year-round supply of high-quality fruits and vegetables, strengthening both the economy of the republic and the country's food security as a whole.

Copeland launches CO₂ compressor with DVI technology

In December 2025, Copeland—a global leader in compressor manufacturing—unveiled a new development: a CO₂ scroll compressor featuring Dynamic Vapor Injection (DVI) technology. This milestone marked a significant step in the evolution of industrial refrigeration equipment, as the combination of the natural refrigerant CO₂ and an advanced vapor injection system opens up new possibilities for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing operating costs, and meeting environmental regulations.
