The introduction of natural refrigerants in electric vehicles will be encouraged by new regulatory requirements.

According to a report by S&P Global Mobility analysts, China is seen as a global leader in the transition to natural refrigerants in the electric vehicle industry. The study concludes that "China will be a major driver in the transition to natural refrigerants for electric vehicles."

This leading position will be achieved primarily through regulatory mechanisms rather than market processes. Experts note that "the regulatory act, which will take effect in 2029, will give Chinese car manufacturers a five-year advantage over their European competitors." This assessment indicates the emergence of a sustainable technological gap that could impact the balance of power in the global automotive sector.

Regulatory measures as a source of competitive advantage.

While European companies are just beginning to expand the use of R1234yf refrigerant and explore CO₂ systems, China is ready for decisive action. The regulation, which is scheduled to be implemented by 2029, provides local manufacturers with clear and mandatory guidelines for planning. This requires them to invest actively in research and development, reorganize the supply chain, and establish production lines for next-generation climate systems.

"Chinese automakers will have to intensify the introduction of eco-friendly technologies, which will lead to economies of scale and significantly reduce the cost of relevant solutions for the entire global market," our publication's expert explains.

Technology: R744 as an advanced technology.

It is expected that the main beneficiaries of the new regulation will be carbon dioxide (R744) systems. CO₂ refrigerant, which has a zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a very low global warming potential (GWP = 1), is fully in line with the concept of green transport. In addition, the high operating pressure in R744 systems ensures their increased efficiency in cooling and heating functions, which is particularly important for electric vehicles with their limited energy capacity.

In addition to R744, the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants such as R290 (propane) will be expanded, particularly in systems for compact urban models.

Impact on the global refrigeration equipment industry.

This trend creates significant opportunities for manufacturers of components such as compressors, heat exchangers, valves, and high-pressure piping. The Chinese market will become a major testing ground and growth point for companies specializing in natural refrigerant solutions.

"A company that provides reliable components with an optimal cost-benefit ratio for the Chinese automotive sector will gain a significant share in the promising market for automotive air conditioning systems."

Copeland launches CO₂ compressor with DVI technology

In December 2025, Copeland—a global leader in compressor manufacturing—unveiled a new development: a CO₂ scroll compressor featuring Dynamic Vapor Injection (DVI) technology. This milestone marked a significant step in the evolution of industrial refrigeration equipment, as the combination of the natural refrigerant CO₂ and an advanced vapor injection system opens up new possibilities for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing operating costs, and meeting environmental regulations.
